H4 LED Headlight Bulb Installation Guide for Motorcycles
A practical, step-by-step guide to installing an H4 LED headlight bulb on a motorcycle — fitment, polarity, and common mistakes to avoid for a safe, bright upgrade.

Upgrading a motorcycle headlight from a halogen to an H4 LED bulb is one of the most popular — and most satisfying — aftermarket changes. It’s brighter, runs cooler, and uses less power. But a few mistakes can leave you with a bulb that flickers, a dashboard warning, or a beam that blinds oncoming traffic.
Here’s how to get it right the first time.
1. Check your bulb base and fitment
The H4 (also labelled 9003 or HB2) is a three-prong bulb with a single housing for both high and low beam. Before ordering, confirm:
- Your motorcycle uses an H4 socket, not H7, HS1, or BA20D.
- Your bike’s voltage is compatible (12V is standard).
If you’re not sure, take the old bulb out and match the connector. Getting the base right avoids a return and a stall in your workshop.
2. Test the polarity before you mount
LED bulbs are polarised. If the bike doesn’t light up after installation, flip the connector 180 degrees. Many LED bulbs come with a reversible plug for this reason.
3. Aim the beam, don’t just bolt it in
An LED that’s too high or too wide will scatter light and annoy other drivers. Use the bike’s adjustment screws to set the beam slightly below horizontal. A well-aimed LED makes the upgrade safe, not just bright.
4. Choose a bulb with a fan or heat sink
LED chips produce heat. A bulb with an integrated fan or a solid aluminium heat sink keeps the output stable over time. Without adequate cooling, the bulb dims and its lifespan shortens.
5. Watch for flicker and warning lights
Some motorcycles canbus systems flag LED bulbs. If you see a dash warning or flickering, add a CANbus-compatible driver or an anti-flicker resistor. Many modern bulbs, including our H4 LED headlight bulb, ship with a driver that prevents this.
The bottom line
A proper H4 LED install is straightforward: match the base, mind the polarity, aim the beam, and ensure cooling. Done right, you get a brighter, safer ride for years.
